Who Shot, I Shot redacts the gunfighters from two Hollywood Westerns: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) and I Shot Jesse James (1949). Obscuring these men from the footage allows for the viewer to look past mythic characterizations — the outlaw, the marshal, the loner, and the benevolent gunslinger — and see more clearly, through absence, the violence, omnipresence, and obsession of the gun. The fram no longer contains hero and anti-hero, it presents only a ghost shooter and the society that lives with this specter.
